CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

“ABBY, SERIOUSLY, EAT something. If this is some kind of wedding dress diet I’m going to kill you,” Clarissa said. They were at Abby’s favourite fast food place, but today the smell of the chicken was making her stomach turn. She’d asked Clarissa to join her for lunch so she could tell her about the cancelled wedding and all that happened with Jade, but now she felt too depressed to talk about any of it.

“You don’t have to tell me what happened if you don’t want to,” Clarissa said softly, picking at her food.

“I flipped out at my mom.” Abby swallowed hard, blinking back tears.

“Oh…” Clarissa set her hand over Abby’s. The simple touch caused a flood of tears to fall. The cashier glanced at them from behind the front counter, then left to go to the back. There were no other customers in the small fast-food restaurant, which was really just a drive thru location but had two tables inside with chairs.

“Even if marrying Ben is the logical thing to do, I don’t love him. I think I’m in love with Jade.” Abby stopped to wipe her eyes with a napkin.

“Are you sure?” Clarissa asked, a worried expression on her face.

“His touches are like drinking water when you’re really thirsty. When I’m with him everything is okay. I stop feeling shaky.” Abby held out her hand for Clarissa to see. It trembled slightly. “See.”

“You need to eat.”

“I need to sleep too, but I can’t do that either. I know if Jade was beside me I’d fall asleep instantly.”

“This is all kind of sudden isn’t it?”

“I know…” Abby’s shoulders slumped. “What’s wrong with me?”

“You’re just love sick,” Clarissa said, rubbing Abby’s back.

“But you’ve never been like this before.”

“I know, but you’re so intense.”

“Maybe that’s why I can’t have sex, because it would just be too intense for me or something, and my body is rejecting it for my own good.”

“So you didn’t have sex with Jade?”

“Of course not! Look how upset I am already.” Abby sniffled. “And all we did was kiss.”

“He kissed you?” Clarissa smiled. “Like a real kiss, right?”

Abby smiled. “Yes!” She clapped her hands together. “Oh Clarissa, it was like fire and water at the same time.”

Clarissa simply nodded, but looked confused.

“It’s like he opened up a new side of me that I never knew existed,” Abby continued. “My life was on pause, suspended until the moment he kissed me. And when we kiss it’s like I want to kiss forever and never stop, or at least until I fall asleep in his arms. Everything else seems like a waste of time, an interruption to being together.”

“Wow,” Clarissa put down the piece of chicken she was about to eat. “That sounds more intense than any sexual experience I’ve ever had. I’ve never been love sick or weak at the knees, feeling faint, or any of that good stuff.”

Abby nodded. Clarissa was a strong person who enjoyed intimacy but didn’t get overwhelmed by it. It was nice to be able to talk to her, even if they were so different.
